Suspected al-Shabab militants have killed at least six people in the 2.45am attack in north-east Kenya, the Mandera County Governor Ali Roba has confirmed.
Roba said one person had also been seriously injured in the attack after the militants attacked them at Bulla public works.
“Out of 33 non locals residing in one plot, six were shot dead and 27 rescued by our security officers manning the sector,” Mr Roba said.
Kenya’s Daily Nation says the attack targeted “non-locals”.
There was an explosion as police attempted to get into the house to retrieve the bodies, ripping off one of the roof tops.
There were no injuries from the explosion.
Police said landmines planted in compound were delaying their attempts to retrieve bodies of the dead. Bomb experts were expected to detonate the explosives.
Al-Shabab, an Islamist militant group, is battling the UN-backed government in Somalia, and has carried out a string of attacks in neighbouring Kenya.
Militants have carried out frequent attacks on the Mandera region, which borders Somalia. They target people who are not from the local area and security forces, Kenyan papers say.
