South African President Jacob Zuma is in Ethiopia to attend the African Union high-level meeting on Libya.

The meeting has been convened by the chairperson of the AU, President Idriss Déby Itno of the Republic of Chad, to review the evolution of the situation in Libya. The meeting will also look at regional and international efforts aimed at addressing the turmoil in that country.

Libya has continued to be in turmoil even as UN forces battle to crash the Islamist militants out of the country.

The lawlessness in the country has created a vacuum that human smugglers have used to send thousands of migrants to Europe via the Mediterranean Sea.

Members of the AU high-level committee on Libya include Algeria, the Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Mauritania (Chair), Niger, South Africa and Uganda.

The AU representative for Libya is the former president of Tanzania Jakaya Kikwete.

Zuma is accompanied by Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and Minister of State Security David Mahlobo.
