At least 51 people die per day in South Africa as crime statistics increased by 4.9 percent last year due a prevalent culture of violence in the country reports AFP.

Rising cases of domestic violence and alcohol abuse are the main reason to the sharp increase according to the Police Minister Nathi Nhleko.

“What it says about us South Africans is that we are violent, we have a prevalent culture of violence,” Nathi told journalists.

Most of the murders occurred in urban areas indoors among people who know each other leading to a 20 percent rise on murder cases over the last four years in South Africa.

One of the most rampant crimes in South Africa, carjacking, has seen an increase of 14.3 percent last year and house robberies also increasing by 2.7 percent.

“While police are central to the alleviation of acts of criminality in society, such crimes point to social ills and thus require interventions beyond the police,” said the governing African National Congress in a statement

In a period of 12 months 18, 673 people were killed compared to a lower number of 17,805 people last year.

Poverty and unemployment are some of the reasons associated with the increasing crime in South Africa.
