American star singer Akon got a huge boost in his project that aims to expand electricity reach in Africa, after he secured $1 billion in a Chinese credit line.

The 43-year-old began a project to power over 16 million homes in Africa. He took his project to 15 countries with much success, and is now targeting to reach over 80 million homes.
“Without electricity, you can’t even begin to develop a country, let alone your own home,” the singer says.

Akon is looking to use the money to purchase solar panels to get electricity to the people of the community.

Akon was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and spent much of his childhood in the West African country Senegal, which he describes as his “hometown”.

The ‘Lonely’ hit singer is a child of a dancer mother and a percussionist father. He learned to play five instruments, including drums, guitar and djembe at a very young age.
