Muslim teenager launches a campaign to introduce hijab emoji


 
 
A Muslim teenager has launched a campaign for a hijab emoji to be added to smartphones.

The 15-year-old Rayouf Alhumedhi who is Saudi Arabian but lives in Berlin launched the campaign after realising hijab-wearing women were not represented in the collection of digital icons.

“I wanted something to represent me, alongside the millions of women who wear the headscarf every day, and pride themselves on wearing the headscarf,” The Washington Post reports.

Alhumedhi has sent her proposal to have the emoji added by the Unicode Consortium, the company behind creation of emojis.

Her proposal has gained support from one of Reddit’s co-founder was promoted Tuesday afternoon in an “Ask me Anything’’ on the platform.
