United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire prepares to leave

United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI) to leave the West African country by June 2017 according to an agreement signed on Monday between the government of Cote d’Ivoire and the UN operation, reports rfi

The two parties agreed to transfer the UNOCI duties to the national authorities. UN forces have been in country for the past 12 years since the 2004 – 2011 crisis.

Challenges for Cote d’Ivoire as the troops withdraw include rehabilitating the ex-combatants, eradication of weapons such as small calibres which continue to circulate and some weakness in the military leadership of the Ivorian armed forces, Republican Forces of Côte d’Ivoire.

In April this year, United Nations Security Council  renewed the mandate of the UN peacekeeping mission in Côte d’Ivoire for a final period, extending it until the end of June next year, and also decided to terminate all arms, travel and financial sanctions against the country, with immediate effect.

“The Secretary-General welcomes the determination of the people and the Government of Côte d’Ivoire in overcoming the political and security crises that led to the deployment of UNOCI in April 2004,” said Ban Ki-moon while still UN Secretary-General in April

A budget of $ 50 million has been has pledged by partners to complete the work by UN begun in the country for recovery and development.
